Costa Rican nativity

Our trip to Costa Rica was unplanned and not even on our radar.  An invitation from Lincoln's brother made this trip possible.  We paid for transportation  (which was less than stateside travel plus free international baggage!) and some food and the rest of the bill (housing, rental car, food, and some recreation) was covered by Lincoln's brother's awesome boss.

There were MANY nativity scenes to be found in Costa Rica.  My next few posts will be those.  They are all little, but unique!

Graceful nativity

I've missed a few days of posting nativity scenes and still have a bunch to do!  I guess I'll just keep plugging along!

This one was a gift from my husband Lincoln.  He knows I love the gracefulness of Lladro but can't afford that!  The tallness of these figurines is very nice! Kind-of Lladroesque!

Love it!

A magnetic nativity

We picked up this nativity in North Carolina at the Biltmore estate.  I really liked the tree shape, and the fact that each one of the figurines in the tree can be removed and placed back in the tree like a puzzle.  Each piece is a magnet.  I think it is meant to be a children's toy.  I would have a hard time letting someone play with it though!

At the Biltmore in April, there were a LOT of nativities to choose from!

Puerto Rico

I have two nativity scenes from Puerto Rico and I've never been there!  Both of them are gifts.

This one is from my sister and her husband.  She can tell some great stories of their visit........and she brought me home this goard, that when opened has a nice surprise.

A very neat nativity, and all the more special because of the thought that went behind the gift.  Thanks again, Trudy and Steve!

The most recent

A couple of presents from piano students of mine.  The first, a nativity!!!!!!! And the second, a Christmas twig for my piano.  So cute!

For the record, this is the first thing I have EVER set on my new piano for display.  This is a very privileged twig!

Nativity, aye?

We got this one on our recent trip to Canada.

Hey, have you heard the joke about how they named Canada.

Well.........there was a group of men, and they were debating how to name their new country.  They couldn't agree and so they decided to draw letters out of a bowl and just name it randomly.  The first letter they drew was "c aye," the next was "n aye" and then "d aye."!!!!!!

My grandpa young told us that joke a loooooooooong time ago.  I'm not good with jokes but remember this one!

I actually told this joke to a Canadian couple on our cruise. They hadn't ever heard this joke before.  She said " aye" after about every sentence.  I brought it to her attention and it must have bothered her because she stopped doing it.  Now I've noticed I say it a lot.  Phewy!

Anyhow, we bought this really cool nativity made out of wood from the artisan himself.  He broke it down flat for traveling and we put it back together for displaying.  Love it!

A Mexican nativity

We picked up this nativity in Puerto Vallarta.  It is sometimes a challenge to find merchandise that is actually made in the country and not "made in China."  It is important (mostly) for me to find something actually made in the country.

I don't know if Mexico ever had elephants.......I know there are elephant bones that have been found in northern America......but one of the things I enjoy about this nativity is that one of the wisemen has an elephant that he journeyed on.  Cute!

I worked for this one!

A little over a year ago my mother-in-law asked me to be her traveling companion on a Mediterranean cruise.  Of course I accepted her invitation!

Her top thing that she wanted to do was to climb Mt. Vesuvius.  I, myself don't like to hike.  My body just doesn't do well on a hike and my brain tells me it is a dumb thing to do!  But hey, she was 74 and I was 47, so I thought I might be able to keep up with her!  She is one go-getter and has walked the legs off of our family before so honestly I was a little scared she would leave me in the dust!

We both did fine.  One of the things that was nice was that when we got to the top of Mount Vesuvius, there were little shops selling souvenirs for great prices.

I went on a quest to find a nativity scene.  Most of the vendors did not speak English and I had fun trying to explain what I wanted.  "Bambino, haysoos creestos (Jesus Christ :-) ) navidad?" I said, rocking an imaginary baby in my arms!

This, rustic old Italian gentleman figured out what I was trying to say and led me to some nativity scenes made out of lava.

I hope you can see this against the black background......... Mt. Vesuvius lava.  I also picked up a necklace made out of the same color lava.  A string of lava "pearls"!

Busy as a bee

I didn't post yesterday because I was busy busy busy!  2 cookie exchanges down and a lot to do before Christmas!  Another busy one today, hopefully I'll get another nativity scene posted before the end of it.........but not now.  I hit the day running with piano lessons at beginning at 7:30.  Yes.  A.M.!

Sretan Bozic i Nova Godina

A Croation nativity.  I really thought in Croatia that I might not be able to find a Nativity.

There were a lot of nick knacks with the theme of the last supper, but not Christ's birth.  Finally a young lady came up with this for me and I'm very happy she did.  This is very unusual and I love it!

Snowy Christmas

This one is a gift from one of our children.  I can't remember which one as it goes clear back to when they were in elementary school.  I have such a bad memory :(

In this snow globe you can see a little bit of me between Mary and Joseph, the shelves in our kitchen, the ceiling fan and what looks to be a reflection of the same shelves on the other side!

Snow globes have always fascinated me.  Isn't everyone fascinated by them?

Mayan Christmas

I felt like I cheated when we bought this nativity set.  It is a Mayan nativity and we bought it at the National Cathedral in DC. We HAVE visited a Mayan ruin, and this set probably did come from South America somewhere but that isn't where we got it!

I love the wise men on their camels in this one.  I forgot to put a coin in these pictures.  The camels are about 7 inches tall.  I've often wondered if this clay has been fired as we get more discoloration every year and it seems to be very fragile.

I've got a bunch of "busy" piano students that make me a bit nervous at this time of year.  I've got lots of fun stuff to for them to look at!  So far, so good!  I'm the only person that has had breakage!

A Puerto Rican Christmas

The nice thing about collecting something is that people, this time my husband Lincoln, will pick you up something while they are traveling.  Lincoln got this nativity set in Puerto Rico.

I especially love the headdress on one of the native Americans.  Sometimes it is hard for me to figure out which figurine is Mary.  One of my Catholic friends told me she almost always has her hands over her heart.  This has helped me with several of our sets.

Itty bitty nativities

These two I picked up in Venice, Italy.  We went to a Murano Glass factory (in Murano) and everything there was a little pricey!

Back in Venice I found these.  The blue one is from Murano which is supposed to be a big thing over there.  Notice the penny?  Notice the baby Jesus in the blue nativity?  The baby is its own piece and is the smallest baby Jesus I have seen and very fragile!

I actually broke the star off the clear one while taking pictures and still didn't get a great picture.  I need more patience!

Weekend getaway

A lot of the little trips we go on are associated with Lincoln's work.
He has a meeting or function and we get to go along.
This was a little different though.
It was a social function and so all expenses were paid by us!

Our plan was to attend the function
and then spend the next day exploring the history of Philadelphia.

Our only challenge was that there was a huge storm in the forecast.
We debated driving back home on Saturday,
but the forecast said that there wouldn't be snow until 6 p.m. Sunday.
NOT TRUE! ha! it started MUCH earlier.

We went downtown so we could visit these places:

In all our years living here we haven't made it up to see the Liberty Bell.
It was first on this list for Sunday Morning.

Just outside the Liberty Bell Museum is Independence Hall.
When this was built in the 1700's it was in the middle of the country,
off by itself . . . . now it is surrounded by a busy city.

From looking at this picture I had always thought this room
must be humongous.

It seemed small,
but monumental events happened there.
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed here.

On our way to the Benjamin Franklin Museum
we saw this old bank built in the 1700's also.
The columns looked cool to me
worn down by the elements.

Ben Franklin's home is gone but
there is a very nice interactive museum on the property.
It was fun to visit.
This is a glass harmonica that Ben Franklin invented.

The museum is underground,
and by the time we got outside it had started to snow
and had already dropped a couple inches.
We ended up getting stuck in traffic
and spent an extra night in a nearby community.
It would have been nice to spend more time in Philly.

Mele kalikimaka

It was really hard to find a nativity scene in Hawaii.  This is the only one I found and so didn't get to pick and choose.  This one is made up of a bunch of different kinds of wood which makes it interesting.

I decided I would put a coin in these pictures so the viewer of them will have an idea how big each one is.

Cozumel nativity

I got this nativity in Cozumel and the man I bought it from would not dicker with me.  The price was the price was the price.

I was really disgusted when a few months later I found the same set in San Antonio for half the price!  Oh well!  At least I could still say I got this one on Mexico!

Our first

This is our first nativity scene we purchased.  I bought it in Delta, Utah when we lived there for a couple of years.

I used to love it when my Grandma Young got her nativity set out each December.  Her set was very basic.  I think she must have made it herself.  As I remember, it was made of a light cardboard material and mounted on wooden spools that she had split to hold the Nativity figures up.  It was so simple.  So beautiful to my eyes, and perfect!

I never imagined then that I would own more than one set.  I really had to go out on a limb to afford this first one but I had to have it.

It is a very breakable set, and all through these years we've only broken off one of the wise men's urns!!! I've attached and reattached it but today it sits perched precariously unglued to its figurine.

I always set up the animals to look out at us. My son Justin would always turn them inward to look at Jesus.  I would turn them back and then he would turn them inward again.  We had our little battle until he left home and he doesn't know he converted me.  I always turn them toward Jesus now.  :-)

cRaZy huh?

Feliz Navidad

My blog has been suffering a lot because of my acquisition of a smart phone.  I find that opening my lap top takes a lot of patience.  I have to wait for all of its, what I call "clickety clacketies"  and updates of this and thats in order to use it.

I figured out how to post to my blog using e-mail!  Now my only problem is that I can type much faster on my laptop.  The cell phone swyping thing can get frustrating at times!

I decided that through December I am going to share some of the Nativity Scenes that I have been collecting over the years in places that Lincoln and I have traveled.

I didn't start collecting them until a few years back but it has been fun to find them and know that whatever the season, wherever you are, they CAN be found.

My first one to share with you is from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Forgive my formatting.......email blogging doesn't give you many options!  :-)
